Montreal Grand Eruv is Now a Reality - June 10, 2025

We are thrilled to announce that, after a long and determined journey, our community has successfully expanded and enhanced Montreal's Eruv.

An Eruv is a communal “boundary” that allows those within it to connect with one another over Shabbat with far greater ease. An Eruv fosters unity - and our newly expanded Eruv was created through unity.

Through the hard work of many, we have reached a historic milestone in Montreal. Rabbi Whitman, along with the rabbis of the Ashkenazi, Chasidish, Chabad, Yeshivish, and Sephardic communities have collaborated and connected their local Eruvs (Hampstead, CSL, Montreal West, NDG, Snowdon, De Vimy, and Outremont) to create a continuous citywide Eruv, while maintaining the independence of each of their respective Eruvs. This gigantic project is a living testament to the power and effectiveness of the unity of our community leaders, and will greatly enhance the unity of our entire Montreal Jewish community.

Together, we’ve shown that when our Rabbis and community stand united, we can achieve great things. Let’s continue building a stronger, more inclusive community - one Shabbat at a time.

If you wish to use the Eruv, please see the map, and the legend explaining the areas not in the Eruv. The ability to use the Eruv is dependent on the weekly checking to ensure that the Eruv is up. Therefore, before using the Eruv each Shabbat, you must confirm the status of the Eruv. You can do this by checking the website or by signing up for a text or email on the website. Please note that, especially if there are repairs which need to be made, the confirmation could possibly be delayed till Friday afternoon.

Please note: The construction of an Eruv always has various stricter and more lenient opinions, whose validity may be disputed by other Halachic authorities. This Eruv was constructed taking into account the stringencies of each individual Eruv, so the standard is consistent from one end to the other. All the rabbis below agree that the entire Eruv project meets their standards. For any questions about specific standards used in the Eruv, please contact Rabbi Eytan Jacob by email:

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who have helped support and fund the Eruv. The construction, along with the ongoing weekly checking and maintenance of the Eruv, is a major responsibility and a significant financial undertaking. We invite you join in this tremendous Zechut and benefit for our entire community. Your support will enable the Eruv to continue serving us week after week.
